  • Provenance:
    John F. Davis (1859-1930) was born on Angel Island, Marin County, California. Returning to California after graduating from Harvard College, he attended Hastings College of Law, class of 1884. He was appointed by the Governor as a Judge of the Superior Court of Amador County, as well as representing the tenth district in the state Senate; in 1902 he was appointed Code Commissioner, an office he held until 1907. Davis was deeply passionate about the history and culture of the state, publishing a well regarded text compiling the laws of California, as well as 'California, Romantic and Resourceful,' in 1914. For many years he was an officer of the Native Sons of the Golden West, preserving historic landmarks in the state.
